“What do you do?”
It’s a simple question. And yet, for most of my professional career, it’s one I’ve answered indirectly.
My typical response was, “I’m a social worker by training. Right now I am…” followed by whatever position I happened to hold at the time.
I’ve deeply appreciated my career path. Each role was meaningful, offered the opportunity to make an impact, and stretched me in important ways. And while those experiences shaped me, and while I cared deeply about the work, the roles never quite felt like the place I was ultimately meant to land.
Recently, as I’ve met new people and have been asked that familiar question, I’ve found myself answering differently.
“I focus on workplace culture, partnering with organizations to create environments in which people, teams, and the organization itself can thrive.”
For the first time, the answer feels simple. And exactly right.
And as I celebrate another trip around the sun, I’m grateful to be doing work that feels deeply aligned with who I am and the difference I’m here to make.
